Safer Gambling in BC: Limits, Self-Exclusion and Free Support Lines
Gambling should be something you choose to spend money on, never a way to make money. If it has stopped feeling like a choice, help in British Columbia is free, confidential and available around the clock.
Gambling Support BC
The provincial service answers 24/7 on a toll-free line, can arrange a free counsellor, and offers culturally relevant, trauma-informed support for Indigenous people. You can also ask for help through the online form at gamblingsupportbc.ca. The programme is run by the Independent Gambling Control Office.
National Help: Gambling Help and Referral and CAMH
Outside BC, or if you prefer a national service, Gambling Help and Referral lists help by province, and CAMH in Toronto runs a gambling programme.
19+. T&Cs Apply. Play Responsibly. Gambling can be addictive. Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) 416 535-8501, press 21 or https://aidejeu.ca/en/
Gambling Help and Referral (aidejeu.ca) is a free, confidential referral service that points you to support where you live. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) offers treatment and information for people affected by gambling and for their families.
Both are useful if you live in British Columbia and want a second option, or if someone close to you lives in another province. For anyone in BC, the provincial line above is the fastest route to a counsellor near you.
Game Break: BCLC's Self-Exclusion Programme
Game Break excludes you from PlayNow and BC's casinos and gaming centres for a period you choose. It does not reach sites licensed outside BC.
Every casino, bingo hall and PlayNow.com must offer a "free, voluntary self-exclusion program", according to the provincial government. BCLC's version is called Game Break. BCLC has described exclusion terms of six months, one, two or three years, and PlayNow also has a short-term lockout for a break of a few days.
Enrolling on PlayNow closes access to the site for the term you pick, and the balance is refunded to your bank. GameSense advisors, who work in every BC casino, can explain the options in person, and PlayNow's customer support on 1-877-706-6789 can put you through to one.
One limit is worth knowing before you rely on it. Game Break is a BCLC programme, so it covers BCLC's channels only. An international casino that accepts players from BC has no access to the Game Break list. If you exclude yourself from PlayNow, also close or exclude any accounts you hold elsewhere.
Limits You Can Set Today
Deposit limits work at PlayNow and at every casino we list, and most also offer loss limits, reminders or time-outs. Set them before you play, not after a loss.
PlayNow lets you set a weekly deposit limit in one-dollar steps and lower it at any time; its sessions also time out after 30 minutes without activity. The international casinos on this site all offer deposit limits in the account settings, and most add loss limits, session reminders, a cooling-off period and permanent self-exclusion.
A few habits make those tools work:
- Decide the amount first. Set a deposit limit equal to what you are prepared to lose in a week or a month.
- Keep time visible. Turn on reality checks so the site tells you how long you have been playing.
- Leave bonuses alone when you want to stop. Wagering requirements encourage longer play; you can always decline a bonus.
- Never chase losses. A loss is the price of the entertainment, not a debt to win back.
If Someone Close to You Gambles Too Much
Gambling Support BC also helps family members and friends, free of charge.
Worry about someone else's gambling is a common reason people call. The BC line supports family members and friends as well as the person who gambles, and it can arrange counselling for them too. Talking about money calmly, without blame, tends to work better than ultimatums, and a counsellor can help plan that conversation.
If you share finances, protect your own: separate accounts and limits on shared cards are reasonable steps while you look for help together.
Deposit limits, Game Break and a casino's own self-exclusion are all set by the person who gambles; a counsellor can go through them with both of you.
If a phone call feels like too big a step, Gambling Support BC also takes requests through an online form on its website. In any BC casino, the GameSense Advisor on site is another first contact, and the conversation costs nothing.
Safer Gambling in BC: Questions and Answers
Is Gambling Support BC free?
Yes. The line at 1-888-795-6111 is toll-free and answers 24 hours a day. Counselling arranged through it is also free and confidential.
Does Game Break cover offshore casinos?
No. Game Break covers PlayNow and the casinos and gaming centres in British Columbia. To block yourself at an international site you have to use that site's own self-exclusion, and repeat it at every site where you have an account.
How long does a Game Break exclusion last?
BCLC has described terms of six months, one, two or three years. During that time you are not allowed into BC casinos or PlayNow.
What happens to my PlayNow balance if I enrol in Game Break?
PlayNow's help page says that on enrolment "the funds in your PlayNow.com account will be withdrawn and refunded back to you."
Can I set limits at the casinos you list?
Yes. Each of them lets you set deposit limits from your account, and most also offer loss limits, session reminders, a time-out and self-exclusion. Lowering a limit takes effect at once; raising one usually has a waiting period.
What are signs that gambling is becoming a problem?
Spending more than you planned, chasing losses, borrowing to gamble, hiding it from people close to you, or feeling restless when you try to stop. If any of these sound familiar, a call to Gambling Support BC is a good first step.
